As the journey to The Rotary Xperience at EarthX 2026 draws closer, one question keeps returning to me: What do we leave behind when we travel to do good?
In the excitement of conferences, partnerships, and global dialogues, it’s easy to overlook the quieter reality of our footprint — the emissions behind each flight, each connection, each moment of purpose. Over the past few years, I’ve been searching for a partner that treats carbon offsetting not as a box-ticking exercise, but as a science, a stewardship, and a promise.
I found that in Carboreal, a Finnish company reshaping how we think about forest-based carbon sequestration across the Nordic region.
What Makes Carboreal Different
Carboreal doesn’t just plant trees; they grow verified carbon sinks. Each Nordic carbon unit they create represents a scientifically measured removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere — verified, certified, and traceable. Their forests are diverse ecosystems, with spruce, pine, and native deciduous species coexisting in landscapes unsuitable for agriculture. This approach strengthens biodiversity, supports wildlife, and restores resilience to degraded land.
Their transparency is also rare in this field. Every project is monitored and updated publicly — and if data isn’t yet published, they’re open about it. Accountability isn’t a promise; it’s a practice.
A Forest for Every Journey
During my recent visit to Helsinki, we began shaping a collaboration with Carboreal to offset all Rotary-related travel to EarthX 2026. For every ton of CO₂ emitted by our journeys, an equivalent amount will be sequestered through the creation of a new Rotary-affiliated forest in the Nordics.
This isn’t symbolic. It’s measurable, rooted, and enduring — a forest grown in balance with our movement toward global change.
Why This Matters
Talking about climate responsibility is easy. Taking verifiable action is harder. Working with Carboreal gives me confidence that our offsets are real, local, and science-backed, not a gesture of convenience. It’s a way of planting roots — literally and metaphorically — for the next generation.
If you’d like to explore how your travel or organization can offset its impact with transparency and integrity, I’d be happy to connect you with the Carboreal team. Together, we can make sustainability more than a statement — we can make it a living, breathing forest.
